“What a difference a day makes…” It’s a cliche, but true. I think about my own children and how astonishing it was to see them grow as babies. Even now, they’re 13 and 8, and not a day passes when they do something that just blows my mind. That generally is a wonderful thing. Sometimes it just makes me laugh and shake my head. My younger daughter has this habit lately of wiping her hands on her shirt. So there we were yesterday at a restaurant, she finishes her cupcake, and before I could say anything, wipes her frosting-covered fingers across the front of her shirt… For the rest of the afternoon until we could get home, she had finger tracks…

I don’t mean to embarrass her. She already has shown me in eight years that she’s going to grow into a confident, beautiful, sophisticated young woman. But right now she makes me laugh every time she does that, and yes, shake my head a little… She is definitely my kid. LOL

I’m writing this while waiting for a plane at Denver International. It’s become almost a cliche with airline delays again… For the past few years, I’ve been really lucky with flights and getting through airports fairly quickly, even with the gear I usually carry. But not tonight. Weather outside of Chicago made the plane late to Denver, which is the aircraft I need to get to L.A. So here I sit, waiting for a guy I don’t know to get the plane here and get me home. A lot of life is waiting — waiting in line at the bank, waiting for a train to pass, waiting for the rain, waiting for the right time to ask the question… let’s make the most of those moments of waiting. Talk to the people around you, or at least observe and enjoy them. I’m upstairs at DIA in a computer station and an Asian dude in a bad suit is to my left pounding on his laptop to some tunes I can hear through his ear buds. The guy on my right has Bose-style headphones on and is having a VOIP conversation wtih someone, half of which (his half) I am hearing at full volume. This is broken by sporadic announcements from an over-annunciating airport service rep for various customers… Kids scream and leap in a nearby kids play thing, their dad standing with a comatose glazed stare… I talked to a woman earlier who had been at the airport since the previous DAY. Ideally, I’d like to be on my way home. But things could be worse, and it’s not a bad way to spend a couple hours. If I end up staying here till tomorrow, I’ll probably have a totally different opinion…. LOL

Last night, my MySpace account stopped functioning. It basically disappeared. No warning from MySpace — no violation of terms of service or anything like that. It just WENT AWAY… taking my 1700 friends, their lovely page and picture comments and my penetrating thoughts on the universe with them. OK, no great loss on that last part… lol

This just provides me a classic lesson of don’t rely on OPT — other people’s technology. MySpace has something like 185 million people in their network as of this writing. The only reason they care about any of them(us) is for the ad revenue; otherwise, do you really think it affects MySpace’s bottom line if they lose someone here or there? What is their level of concern?

I don’t know what happened to my profile. Many of my friends are on MySpace, so this morning I started another account — www.myspace.com/johnmichaelflynn

Come check it out, leave a message, add me as a friend and leave a pic comment or two…

What else can you do but laugh… lol

I’m a huge fan of clouds, as many of you probably already know or guessed. You have seen a cloud theme in a lot of my work, especially the wide-angle variety…

Sorry, I disappeared for a moment to Waimea Canyon on the island of Kauai, where I remembered one of the most insane cloud photos I had ever created. Not bragging — it just gave me such a rush to do it. I have to find that photo and upload it for you. It is one of my favorite photos that I’ve created.

So here I am in Colorado. I’ll be here till Monday. Try the veal. :-p

This day is filled with fun, barbecues, water balloon fights, kids laughing, families coming together, and of course, fireworks!

What I think about on Independence day is FREEDOM. Freedom of speech, freedom to assemble, freedom to have a critical mind and a voice of expression. A vote. Freedom to be heard. In the spirit of our forefathers and the overall American tradition, question authority. Speak out for what’s right. Use their example of courage, don’t be apathetic or take for granted the founding principles of this great nation. Let’s make sure America remains free from tyranny of all forms, including the tyranny of ignorance or burying our heads in the sand. Be independent. Think. Educate yourself so you have an informed opinion. Take your news from multiple sources. Dream of a better time and do the work to make it so.

As you know, this site has been experiencing some MAJOR glitches with the portfolio galleries. My web developer tried numerous coding fixes without any success, and finaly trashed the entire site and started over. The problem has been fixed and the galleries should be populating with images over the next 24-48 hours. Please refresh your browser to make sure you’re viewing the latest version of the site.

Thanks, everyone, for your patience. I appreciate the e-mails and phone calls troubleshooting the problems, and from this point forward the site should work a lot better. It’s fantastic to have images on my site again. Kinda hard to sell photographic services without pictures — “Just IMAGINE how great this portrait is…” :-p

My dad was one of the biggest influencers in my life. I think we dads sometimes forget the tremendous impact we have on our children’s lives… Each moment we interact with our kids is a chance to pick them up or knock them down. If you wonder how big an impact you have on your child’s life, consider the finding that most young children associate their view of their father with their view of God… No pressure! lol

My dad passed in 2000, WAY before his time. That’s a story for another time. To this day, I remember countless times when we’d go random places and people would run up to him and say hello, introduce their children and tell them, “This is Mr. Flynn. This is the guy I’ve told you about.” That probably sounds like some kinda weird to most people, and it was sometimes. My dad was larger than life at that time in my life. He worked a room like a politician, made people laugh like an entertainer, built stuff, talked about God and philosophy over pizza & beer, and played b-ball with me when he got home from work. He was some kind of amazing.

Years later, he no longer was a giant to me. I saw him for the man he truly was, and it was then that he became my hero. l

Here’s to you, Dad. I miss you. I hope I honour you with the way I raise my kids. You’re the best.

In the category of little factoids that don’t affect our lives very much, I’ve been awarded Honorable Mention in the 2007 BUZZ Marketing Awards. It’s an international competition co-sponsored by Wedding & Portrait Photographers International and Blossom Publishing that recognizes outstanding marketing efforts by professional photographers. I’m proud of winning because it means that I’m designing effective marketing campaigns that are relevant to YOU, my most important person. Plus, it’s an international competition, so it’s kinda cool to be standing in the winner’s circle with photographers from Australia and all across the U.S.

Thank you, WPPI and Blossom!

If you want to see any images on this photographer’s site, I guess you’ll have to wait another half a day or so… The galleries are throwing error messages and fixing it has required taking the portfolio galleries offline and re-work the code. SORRY ABOUT THAT!! Smart people are working on it today, and I’m going to do what I do… make some photographs!

If it fails to resolve today, then I guess we’ll all have to go to Plan B… storming the gate or whatever. lol

This reminds me of this past weekend when my younger daughter and I spent 20 minutes (yes, really, 20 minutes!) in the drive-thru at Carl’s Jr. by Newhall Ranch Road. That turned out to be our BETTER fast food experience of the day. An hour later, my older daughter and I were standing in Jack in the Box on Lyons wondering about our order. We had been through the drive-thru, paid, and received an invitation to pull around and park, where someone was supposed to bring our food to us. 15 minutes later, we went back inside. Our order had apparently disappeared into Jackspace. They re-made it, added a fruit cup and sent us on our way. I’m thinking as we get back in the car that I could do a website on the fast food experiences I’ve had in my life… www.nothing-happy-in-this-meal.com? My brain fluttered away on a tangent about hyphens or no hyphens and that’s where it ended…

That was a surreal day in a lot of ways, some time I’ll have to tell you about the rest of it…

I suppose if you don’t know me well, you would naturally assume that I like fast food drive-thru’s. Actually, it was pretty weird to be doing fast food at all, and doing TWO fast food places in one day…?!? Did my experience make me re-consider that perhaps I should eat fast food all the time? Uh… no.
If you have kids, you know about scheduling issues and some days are a two fast food day. Please don’t flame me about my kids’ eating habits — they generally eat well when they’re not driving thru for lunch. Just trying to teach them a little American tradition about our great nation — eat FAST and get on to the next thing… Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go!!! :-p

I dunno. I doubt if any of the chefs at a five star restaurant care about “FAST” unless it has to do with delivering the food while it’s still hot, and providing their guests with superior service. Conversation, laughing, savoring… it’s a lot better than chew, suck and swallow. LOL

Sometimes you just need a little patience.

John
